Hello Everyone and Welcome to our Blog!
I am a wife, mother and a grandmother to three wonderful children and four beautiful grand babies as well as the owner and operator of Dairy-Aire Crafts & Gifts. We live on a farm in the country in the heart of Idaho. Dairy-Aire Crafts was founded in 1995 as a way for me to express my creative outlet and to get out of the house for a little while.
I started out making crafts and gifts and doing shows with my girl friend Kelly. In 1991, my parents , who owned a dairy at the time, offered to turn the top floor loft ,which wasn’t being used, into a workshop and show room for me. (It was a huge area split into two rooms.) One day after building the steps on the outside of the building with my dad, he sat down on the steps with me and asked me, “what are you going to name it?” Just jokingly he said that I would have to have something with dairy in it because when people came, they were going to smell the dairy air! And that was how we got our name!
My folks ended up selling the dairy and we put up our own workshop on our property but this is one of the best memories I have with my dad. So no matter weather I am making candles, soaps, lotion or scrubs for a neighbor down the road or a fancy boutique in Maryland, in loving memory of my dad who passed away in 2001, we will always be Dairy-Aire Crafts.
I started out making melt and pour soaps for my family and to give everyone for Christmas gifts. But soon this wasn’t enough of a challenge for me and my research begin on making cold process soap. I still remember my first batch I made. It took me months to get up the courage to do it because I was terrified of blowing up my house with the lye. I look back on that first batch and remember I felt like I was in a complete Hazmat suit and was shaking in my shoes.
It took me years of researching and playing with the different oils and their combinations till I was finally satisfied with the recipe that we use for our soaps today. I wanted a soap that lathered good and left your skin moisturized. With most store bought soaps I always felt like I had to slather on a ton of lotion after getting out of the bath because my skin was so dry. My quest was to find a balance I was happy with and that would please my customers.
By listening to the feedback I have received from customers with skin problems that ranged from dry sensitive skin to eczema. I developed our current soap line and it has been a huge hit with my customers. We incorporate moisturizing oils such as all natural Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter into every batch of soap we make. Making soap to me is not just a business, it is my Passion!
I started making candles 14 or 15 years ago. I am a candleholic! There I admitted it! I love making my home smell good and was tired of spending money on candles that looked good but you couldn’t smell! After researching and trying out several different waxes I finally found one I liked.
I knew I had found my winner when I received a call at 11:30 at night from my sister. She wanted to know if I had any popcorn. I said “sis you do realize it is 11:30 at night”? Yup she said, but it is all your fault. My fault, how? She proceeded to tell me how she had been testing my tarts for me and had put in my popcorn one and now her whole house smelled like popcorn and she didn’t have any. She ended up driving over to my house in her PJ’s with her long coat over them to get some popcorn.
Over the years we have expanded our line to include several more products such as our lotions, hand sanitizers, room and body sprays to our pillar candles. We still work with our woodworking also and will be including several unique one of a kind gifts that we will have available on the site.
So I hope you will join us as we continue to travel on our never ending journey. Grab a cup of coffee or tea, put your feet up and enjoy spending a few minutes of your day relaxing with us!
Thank you for allowing me to hopefully enlighten your day with a little sunshine.
