Well here it is, it was that time again to join Amy and all the hundreds of other soapers in the Great Cakes Soap Works “Mantra Swirl Challenge”.

Each month we are all learning a new technique or improving on one we already do.  The challenge this month was the Mantra Swirl.  This is one that I had not done before and was excited to do.  At least on the first couple tries.  After that it became an obsession to get it right.  When Amy first presented us with our July Challenge, we were given two different options.  The regular Mantra Swirl or the Modified Mantra Swirl that Kendra from Amathia Soapworks had developed.  I really liked the more advanced look that Kendra had done so I decided that this was the design I would do.  Unfortunately Kendra made it look way easier then it was.  Below is the video that Kendra did.

Kendra from Amathia Soapworks Video on the Modified Mantra Swirl

This was a first for me in more ways then one.  I have always been the one behind the camera, not in front of it.  I have had several new soapers asking if I had any videos they could watch.  So this one also includes one of my very first Soapmaking Videos.  Someday I may actually show more then my hands. LOL

After trying this design several times, like 6, I still wasn’t getting the pattern right.  Not to mention that even fragrances that I had tested prior were getting to thick on me before I even got to the pattern designing state, again, it was because I was over stick blending it.   I was messaging back and forth with Kendra when we hit on the problem, I was not actually doing the design right.  I was doing it like it was done on the Soap Queen blog which was not the way I needed to be doing it.   While taking an online class Friday with Kendra, I did my last and final try at the Mantra Swirl.  The pattern finally turned out.  Yup I put the stick blender down at last!   I hope you enjoy the video and the pictures of all the mishaps along the way.

Is a candle or tart worth more money if it is triple scented?

This is one of those things that I see all the time and it irritates the heck out of me.  Some candle makers refer to a triple scented candle as one that is layered with three different scents.  In that case I can see them charging a little more for it because yes it is more work.  But the ones that really bother me are the ones  selling tarts that say they will charge and extra $1.00 to triple scent them and then you will have a stronger longer lasting tart.  This is BULL!!!  Here is one of the well known secrets that those unscrupulous vendors don’t want you to know.

Wax only holds so much fragrance period!  Any good vendor is already putting in the maximum scent the wax will hold to give you the best tart that they can produce.  The ones that are telling you that for just a little more money, they will give you more scent and a better tart or candle are just trying to rip you off.

The second point I want to make is candles or tarts with excess oil on them.  These are not better tarts, they are not more fragrant, it just means they messed up.  Either their scent is not compatible with their wax,  they used more fragrance oil then the wax would hold, they are just using a cheap wax, or just messed up and didn’t do it at the right temperatures.  This is a SCREW UP!   But time and time again I see ladies going mad over tarts or loaves that have excess oil setting on them.  They won’t be any stronger and in some cases will actually be weaker because the oil didn’t bind properly with the wax.  But yet I see vendors selling these mess ups for big bucks because the consumers don’t know any better.

I want my customers and followers to know this information so that they can be informed to get their monies worth but not get ripped off.

New Scent Testing for 2013

Well we have been busy in the lab!  Pouring new test scents for the new year.  We have 13 new scents that we poured in the last few days and now the testing begins.

Tonight our first one that we put in will definately be in the new lineup.  We started it in the kitchen and so far we can smell it in the livingroom, bathroom, hallway and even in the office.

So our first addition will be Grapefruit and Mangosteen.  I love citrus scents and this one packs a wallup!   Here is the scent description:

Juicy Grapefruit mixed with exotic mangosteen fruit with just a touch of added peaches. Wonderfully exotic citrus scent you are sure to love!

We also have these new lip balm flavors that we are adding to our line:  Juicy Orange, Green Apple, Chocolate Mint, Buttery Caramel, Cinnamon, Pina Colada, Huckleberry, Latte, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Gingersnap, Popcorn, Drench Toast and Dill Pickle!!

More flavors will be listed tomorrow on the site!  Have a great evening everyone!
